Chelsea Transfer News: Mohamed Salah Return Urged as Marcel Desailly Makes Stunning Claim

Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool exit has already become one of the defining transfer stories of the summer, and Chelsea have now been placed into the conversation in eye-catching fashion.

Former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly has urged the club to re-sign Salah on a free transfer once his Liverpool contract expires. It is a bold suggestion, given Salah’s extraordinary Anfield legacy and his limited first spell at Stamford Bridge.

Salah Transfer Claim Adds Intrigue

“Salah. Bring Mohamed Salah back,” Desailly told FootballTransfers when asked who new manager Xabi Alonso should sign during his first transfer window as Chelsea boss.

That quote carries weight because Chelsea know both sides of the Salah story. They saw the raw talent arrive in 2014, then watched him leave for Roma before becoming one of the Premier League’s greatest forwards at Liverpool.

“You know, he’s been there before and it didn’t work out. Maybe Salah wants a London club for his family, for a better quality of life. It’s not that Liverpool is unlivable, but London might be much better for them. I would say he is one of those experienced players who can bring that special element into the system.”

Chelsea Need Experience Around Alonso

Desailly’s argument is rooted in experience. Chelsea’s squad has been built around youthful potential, but Alonso’s arrival creates a demand for senior figures who understand elite pressure.

Salah, now 33, scored 257 goals in 442 games for Liverpool after leaving Chelsea. Those numbers are not nostalgia, they are evidence of elite output across almost a decade. Even after a difficult 2025-26 campaign, his intelligence, movement and big-match authority would still offer something Chelsea lack.

There is also a commercial and emotional dimension. A Salah return would generate enormous attention, while giving the player a chance to rewrite a brief and frustrating Stamford Bridge chapter.

Darwin Nunez Mention Raises Eyebrows

Desailly also floated another unexpected name, Salah’s former Liverpool team-mate Darwin Nunez.

“I also love Darwin Nunez,” Desailly added. “Yeah, he’s not that experienced yet, but I feel that at Chelsea he can perform. He can bring something special into the system. If he plays by himself up front, he can really be a great point of reference in a Xabi Alonso system.”

Nunez’s situation at Al-Hilal, where he has been deregistered and is expected to depart, makes him a curious market opportunity. Chelsea may need a striker depending on Liam Delap’s future, and Nunez would certainly bring chaos, power and unpredictability.

Salah Deal Still Looks Unlikely

For all the intrigue, Salah to Chelsea feels difficult. His wage demands would likely stretch Chelsea’s strict structure under BlueCo, and there remains little indication that he wants another Premier League challenge after Liverpool.

Desailly’s suggestion is fascinating, but Chelsea’s recruitment model has generally moved away from expensive older stars. Salah would be a statement, but perhaps not a strategy.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Chelsea perspective, this report is impossible to ignore, even if it feels more fantasy than firm transfer plan.

Salah returning to Stamford Bridge would be box-office. There would be a sense of unfinished business, because Chelsea never really saw the player he became. Supporters remember the pace and flashes of promise, but not the ruthlessness Liverpool enjoyed for years.

That said, the concern is obvious. Chelsea have spent heavily on younger players, and the wage structure appears central to the project. Bringing in a 33-year-old on huge money would need to be justified by instant impact, leadership and goals.

Many fans would ask whether Salah blocks the pathway for emerging attackers, or whether he gives Alonso the elite finisher this squad has missed. In truth, both arguments are valid.

Nunez is a different conversation. Some Chelsea fans would love his energy, while others would fear another expensive forward who needs refining. If Alonso sees a specific role for him, there may be logic. Without that, it feels risky.

Overall, Desailly’s comments are exciting because they challenge Chelsea’s cautious squad-building model. Salah would be emotional, glamorous and controversial. Whether he would be sensible is another matter entirely.
