Everton's showing on Saturday against Manchester City was not their best, not to mention that it may have cost them centerback James Tarkowski for a period due to injury.
Still, as the 2024/25 Premier League season nears its completion, the Toffees find themselves essentially safe, as Southampton and Leicester City have already confirmed relegation from the top flight and Ipswich Town one more loss away from joining that duo in the Championship for next year.
The goal for David Moyes and the club for the remaining five matches will be twofold: first, to get as high up the table as they can (Everton sit in 13th after Matchday 33); second, to learn what they can about those players who expect to be here next year as well as if there are players they want to bring back.
Saturday will be Everton's penultimate away match of the season, as the Toffees will travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Enzo Maresca's Chelsea side.
Here's what you need to know about the matchup.
Everton sit in 13th place with 38 points, ahead of 14th place Manchester United on goal difference. The Toffees are six points behind 12th place Crystal Palace.
Chelsea are currently in 5th place with 57 points, just one behind Manchester City in 4th and two behind Newcastle United in 3rd.
Usually, fifth place would qualify for the Europe League, but the Premier League earned another Champions League slot based on "the performances of the Premier League teams in Europe this season as the coefficient is the highest among European leagues and the countries who are in the top two in terms of their coefficient get an extra Champions League spot," according to NBC Sports.
So even though the title race is essentially over, there is still plenty to play for from Chelsea's perspective, as Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa both also sit at 57 points, with Bournemouth (49), Fulham (48), and Brighton (48) not far behind.
The match between Everton and Chelsea will take place at Stamford Bridge in London with kickoff scheduled for 12:30 PM local time.
In the United States, that kickoff time will be 7:30 ET/6:30 CT/4:30 PT and will be televised locally on the USA Network.
Over the last six matchups, this has been a fairly even contest, with each club winning twice (Everton on May 2022 and December 2023; Chelsea on August 2022 and April 15) and two draws (March 2023 and December 2024).
The last matchup was a 0-0 draw on December 22, 2024 at Goodison Park.
Chelsea's overall form has been up and down. Since the beginning of March, the London Blues have won six matches out of ten matches, although half of those wins have come in the Europe Conference League. In the Premier League, there form over that time has produced three wins, one loss, and two draws.
David Moyes has faced Chelsea more than any other opponent in his managerial career. In 48 matches, he has amassed eight wins, 13 draws, and 27 losses. His teams have an alarming -40 goal differential against Chelsea squads.
