Chelsea vs Manchester United: Four storylines to keep an eye on

Manchester United face a mammoth trip to Stamford Bridge tomorrow (Saturday) night in a game that could decide the fate of their European exploits for next season.
Should United get the better of their rivals from West London, they will stretch the gap to Chelsea, who are currently in sixth, to ten points, which will surely be enough to secure their place in the Champions League for next year.
If United lose the game, there will be absolute cause for concern, with the gap cut to four and Liverpool and Aston Villa able to leapfrog them in the table with wins of their own. It is a huge clash under the lights at the Bridge, and here are four storylines to whet the appetite before the big kick-off.
United have fallen foul of two red cards in their last two games, with Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez both dismissed against Bournemouth and Leeds, respectively, leaving Michael Carrick with a huge issue at centre-back. The red cards have aligned with United dropping four points they would have fancied securing in the aforementioned fixtures, which would have arguably made the weekend’s game a free hit for the side from Old Trafford.
However, they travel to London under huge pressure after seeing both their appeals turned down and know that any kind of ill-discipline at Stamford Bridge could cost them dearly. Should United go down to ten men once more, Chelsea will surely overpower a United side that looks paper thin as things stand and really throw the cat among the pigeons in the race for the top five.
On the other hand, Chelsea have received the most red cards across the Premier League this season, having been reduced to ten on a whopping seven occasions throughout the campaign. Additionally, the reverse fixture produced two red cards in the first half, with Casemiro following Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for an early bath in the 2-1 win for United at Old Trafford.
Football has a knack of writing its own storylines, and the controversial departure of Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea from United last summer may come back to bite the Reds on Saturday. Garnacho‘s career is yet to take off at Stamford Bridge, and hitting his old club where it hurts represents the perfect opportunity to endear himself to his new set of supporters.
The Argentine’s poor form and recent ill-advised behaviour on social media are likely to see him start on the bench, but he will no doubt be chomping at the bit to come on and show his former employers exactly what they are missing.
Victory on Saturday for Carrick or Liam Rosenior will mean just that little bit more than the three points on offer, with both bosses looking for a statement win to secure their roles for next season.
Despite a couple of hugely notable wins against Manchester City and Arsenal, Carrick knows Champions League qualification is the only way he can be offered the top job at Old Trafford on a permanent basis, and three points tomorrow would go a long way in doing so.
Rosenior has endured a tough start to life in the capital, with the home fans yet to take to his style both on and off the pitch. A win against United would represent the former Strasbourg coach’s best result to date, and should he go on to finish in the Champions League places, he would surely be granted another season at the helm.
Chelsea hold the recent advantage in the fixture, with the Blues unbeaten in the last five at home, a record that does include three draws. A solitary Marc Cucurella goal decided last year’s clash, with a remarkable Cole Palmer-inspired turnaround contributing to a pulsating 4-3 win for Chelsea the season before.
United’s last win at Stamford Bridge came back in 2020, with goals from Anthony Martial and Maguire sealing a comfortable 2-0 win for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men on the day—what Carrick would give for a repeat this time around.
Overall, United have played 83 top-flight matches at the home of the London club, winning 31, losing 28 and drawing 24.
This will be the 199th meeting of the two clubs across all competitions, with United holding the advantage in the fixture that is, incidentally, the most drawn match-up in Premier League history.
Overall head-to-head (all competitions): Played: 198 United wins: 81 Draws: 61 Chelsea wins: 56
Should United leave Stamford Bridge with a point on Saturday, they will fancy themselves to end the season strong and secure their place in next season’s Champions League at the likely expense of their old rivals.
