Chelsea are keen on signing Brighton & Hove Albion striker Joao Pedro and want to get the deal over the line before the Club World Cup, according to Ge Globo.

The Blues are reportedly willing to offer around £50 million for the Brazilian attacker. However, it remains unclear if that sum can convince Brighton to sell.

Chelsea are in the market for a new forward, with Christopher Nkunku set to leave the club this summer, and the transfer team seems to have settled on Pedro.

Pedro has bagged ten goals and seven assists for Brighton this season and has been one of the key players in their push to secure European football next season.

Unfortunately, it is hard to see why Chelsea are pursuing his signature. The 23-year-old is not the profile the Blues are currently missing.

Chelsea need a lethal and dominant striker with excellent box movement, and Pedro does not fit the bill.

To make matters worse, he is not even an upgrade on what the Blues currently have.

Pedro has scored the same number of league goals as Nicolas Jackson. Even young Marc Guiu would match his numbers if not for injury.

Also, Chelsea had several disciplinary issues. The Blues have picked up the most yellow cards in the Premier League this term, and it makes no sense to consider the combustible Pedro.

The former Watford star was only returning from a three-game ban for throwing an arm at Brentford defender Nathan Collins.

Pedro had escaped red cards twice earlier this season against Brentford in December and Ipswich Town a month later. He will add to the chaos at Stamford Bridge with this poor disciplinary record.

Chelsea fans will hope this news turns out to be just a rumour. If Chelsea are genuinely pushing to spend £50 million on Pedro, then it is fair to say they have not learnt from their mistakes.

After seasons of misfires in the transfer market, fans were hoping for smarter, more targeted signings, not more expensive experiments.

If Pedro is the answer, then it is hard to take seriously the question Chelsea are asking of themselves.
