Chelsea are moving ahead with transfers on multiple fronts, with their aim to get the best part of their work done as soon as possible so that the bulk of next season’s first team squad can travel to the Club World Cup, which kicks off in the USA in two weeks.

A striker has already been signed, bids have gone in for defenders and goalkeepers, and work is being done on moving on the first wave of outgoing players too.

Beyond that, there are numerous players signed in advance who will join up with the squad for the first time after this international break, meaning a real injection of depth to Enzo Maresca’s group.

Chelsea not holding Gittens deal to CWC deadline

Kieran Gill on Jamie Gittens transfer future.

However Kieran Gill’s latest Tweet proves that the club aren’t obsessed with the post-season tournament beyond a reasonable point. One of the trickier deals to pull off this summer will be one for Jamie Gittens, the Dortmund left winger we’re clearly very keen on.

Gill reports that Chelsea are “not putting themselves under pressure” to get a deal done before the Club World Cup. The German giants want €50m, and clearly we want to push them lower than that. If negotiating them down significantly is possibility, clearly that’s worth considering.

Chelsea must avoid being led on by selling clubs

On the other hand, as we’ve seen countless times with Chelsea over the years, getting stuck into a long summer of negotiating for the sake of a few million euros is just not worth it when having your targets signed up early has such benefits. We’ll never forget battling all summer for Moises Caicedo only to end up paying more than Brighton originally wanted, and denying him a preseason.

Dortmund are just as adept as the Seagulls at securing big fees.
