Chelsea are working on a deal to sign Jordan Henderson from Brentford on a free transfer.

The 36-year-old joined Brentford on a free transfer last summer and is now set to depart after just 12 months.

Xabi Alonso has been keen to add experience at Chelsea, who failed in their pursuit of another midfielder, Granit Xhaka of Sunderland, earlier this summer.

Chelsea are looking to finalise a deal for Brighton and Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck, 35, as they look to add experience in the dressing room and bolster the attacking department.

Now Chelsea have turned their attention back to midfield and are leading the race, according to The Athletic, to sign Henderson from Brentford.

Multiple clubs are suggested to be interested in Henderson, who is currently on his post-season break after linking up with the England squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Brentford are thought to be willing to allow Henderson to depart for free, with relations between the player and club 'strong'.

Amid interest from several clubs, Ben Jacobs reports Henderson is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, a short journey from Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium.

It marks a huge shift in Chelsea's transfer strategy of recent years. They are also considering a move for John Stones, who departed Manchester City at the end of last season.

Chelsea are looking to add in midfield following the departure of Andrey Santos, who joined Manchester United in a deal worth up to £50 million.

Romeo Lavia is looking to overcome his fitness issues over the last couple of years to become a regular, while Enzo Fernandez's future in west London remains uncertain. He is not due to report back for a couple of weeks after his World Cup final involvement.

With Chelsea not playing in Europe next season, Henderson's minutes may be limited, depending on whether Alonso selects to play with a back three or back four.

Should Fernandez remain at the club, the Argentine and Moises Caicedo will be two frontrunners to start under Alonso.

Henderson's minutes could largely come in the cup competitions - FA Cup and Carabao Cup - or off the bench in the Premier League.

But for a free transfer and likely on respectable wages given he is coming to the end of his career, the value of bringing the England international far outweighs any potential negatives for Alonso.

It will offer him a leader in the dressing room and an individual who has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup with Liverpool.

Maybe, just maybe, Henderson could be dreaming of winning the Premier League one final time before he retires.
