Opportunity knocks for Blues hopeful after Stamford Bridge return

Liam Rosenior is ready to call upon Teddy Sharman-Lowe as the young goalkeeper closes in on a senior Chelsea debut.

The 22-year-old has been on the bench for each of Chelsea’s last four Premier League games and Rosenior says he has “got no worries” about picking the England Under-21 international.

Sharman-Lowe’s recent inclusion as a substitute has come while usual No2 Filip Jorgensen is sidelined through injury.

It could present an opportunity for him to play at Hull in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday night, if Rosenior wishes to rest first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez as one of a number of potential changes to his starting lineup.

Sharman-Lowe spent the first half of the season on loan at Bolton, where he was the No1 for a side sat third in League One.

But Chelsea recalled him early in January and it was decided that he would stay at Stamford Bridge for the remainder of the season.

“Filip is not fully fit at the moment,” Rosenior explained ahead of the visit to former club Hull. “He is working really, really hard on his rehab.

Valuable experience: Teddy Sharman-Lowe returned to Chelsea early in January after a loan spell at Bolton

“Teddy has had a really important loan at this stage of his career. He’s been showing really good things in training as well, so I’ve got no worries if we have to call upon him.”

Sharman-Lowe has yet to make a senior appearance for Chelsea since joining the Blues from Burton in 2020 but could be in line for a debut at Hull or in the coming weeks if Jorgensen remains sidelined and there is a wish to manage Sanchez’s workload.

There is a chance that centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo could make his return from a hamstring injury suffered against Brentford in mid-January.

Rosenior said: “Tosin trained fully for the first time [on Wednesday], so it might come a little bit too soon.

“But we’ll make that judgement [on Thursday] with the medical team.”

Chelsea will be without Marc Cucurella against Hull following a hamstring injury sustained in the midweek draw with Leeds in the Premier League, as well as the likes of Romeo Lavia, Dario Essugo, Levi Colwill and Jamie Gittens.

The Blues will make a late call on the fitness of captain Reece James, who has been dealing with illness following an initial knock and has missed the last three games.
