Chelsea’s clause to permanently sign Jadon Sancho has been officially activated as they can now no longer finish below 14th in the Premier League.
After falling out with former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag in September 2023, Sancho shockingly returned to pre-season training in 2024.
Nonetheless, he eventually went out on loan to Chelsea at the end of the summer window after spending the second half of the 2023/24 season at Borussia Dortmund in a similar deal.
The loan move agreed between the two clubs stated that Chelsea had an obligation to buy him if they finished 14th or higher in the league.
The 2-1 victory over London rivals Fulham confirmed this on Sunday according to The Sun newspaper.
The outlet reports that “Chelsea’s obligation to buy clause for Jadon Sancho has officially been triggered.”
The price of the deal is worth between £20 and £25 million, depending on Chelsea’s final league position, but there is still uncertainty to whether the Blues will go through with the signing or not.
Despite the fact it is an obligation to buy, it has been reliably reported that Chelsea have the option to get out of the deal as long as they pay £5 million in compensation.
The Blues’ boss, Enzo Maresca, has suggested he is very happy with Sancho’s impact and wants to keep him but there has been no official confirmation by the club on what their intentions are for him.
It has been reported that the “club chiefs will save their final decision on Sancho’s future until the end of the campaign.”
Sancho initially impressed at Chelsea but went on a lengthy 16 league game goal drought, which he ended against Ipswich Town. He has recently impressed in Chelsea’s run to the semi-final of the Conference League, however.
What seems clear is that Sancho has no future at Old Trafford as SS Lazio, AS Roma and Borussia Dortmund have also been linked with a move for him should Chelsea pull out of the deal.
