A potential hint has emerged on the future of Omari Kellyman as the Chelsea talent's fruitful loan spell with Cardiff City draws to a close

Cardiff City are gearing up for the 2026/27 Championship campaign after sealing promotion out of League One at the very first time of asking under popular head coach Brian Barry-Murphy, who has re-galvanised the Welsh side throughout a thrilling term and will hope to continue on that front as preparations for life back in the second-tier head underway.

The former Manchester City academy lead elected to emphasise the emerging crop of homegrown, academy-produced talent at his disposal heading into Cardiff's first League One campaign in more than 20 years as opposed to overhauling the squad with a batch of new signings, handing increased roles to the likes of Cian Ashford, Joel Bagan, Rubin and Joel Colwill, Ronan Kpakio and Dylan Lawlor.

Cardiff have, of course, reaped the full rewards of that strategy, wrapping up a second-placed finish behind Lincoln City with games to spare while boosting the club's value, fundamentally improving various elements of the squad from both a short and longer-term perspective and restoring some much-needed feel-good factor among the Bluebirds faithful following a number of dismal campaigns in the Championship.

That's exactly where they're headed now, and plans are in motion going into the summer transfer window. Barry-Murphy has outlined his intention to prioritise quality over quantity for the second summer running once the window opens and Cardiff are reportedly growing increasingly confident of securing a permanent transfer for goalkeeper Nathan Trott, who has impressed on loan from Copenhagen this season, while Football League World exclusively revealed interest in Sheffield Wednesday shot-stopper Pierce Charles earlier this week.

Signings will be made and contractual situations require addressing, and the future of another loanee in Omari Kellyman has also proved a frequent topic of discussion in recent months.

Now, though, as Kellyman prepares to play what will represent - at this moment in time - his final match in Bluebirds colours away at Mansfield Town on Saturday, a potential hint has emerged about where the talented Chelsea prospect's immediate future could lie ahead of a key decision this summer.

Transfer hint offered on Chelsea's Omari Kellyman potentially returning to Cardiff City

Cardiff fought off reported competition from Championship clubs to seal the loan signing of Kellyman, who had joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in a shock £19 million deal in the summer of 2024.

The highly-rated 20-year-old has grown into a key performer under Barry-Murphy over the course of the season, returning nine goals and two assists from 35 league appearances and impressing in a variety of roles, including out wide, in attacking midfield, and even leading the line in the injury-enforced absence of star striker Yousef Salech.

Kellyman has proven a big hit with supporters, too, many of whom are desperate to see the gifted forward return to the Welsh capital for a second stint next term after achieving promotion.

His immediate future remains somewhat up in the air at the time of writing, and though Kellyman has previously described his ambitions to break into the first-team picture at Stamford Bridge, he would appear some way from doing so right now despite two changes in management across yet another tumultuous campaign in West London.

It is, however, the view of Football.London reporter Bobby Vincent - who covers Chelsea - that a loan stint in the Championship would be the logical next step in Kellyman's development and that a move anywhere other than back to Cardiff would be "silly."

With the ex-Derby County and Aston Villa academy starlet having thoroughly enjoyed his time in South Wales, and the relationship between Barry-Murphy and Chelsea chief Joe Shields to leverage, there's clear weight behind this thinking and Cardiff fans will hope that Vincent's verdict comes to fruition in the coming weeks and months.

Speaking to WalesOnline's Bluebirds correspondent Glen Williams on what lies ahead for Kellyman, Vincent stated: "To be honest, the head coach won't make too much of a difference.

"With the way Chelsea operate, with five sporting directors and a heavy academy team, decisions for him to be integrated into the first-team squad will likely be made by them.

"That is the obvious thing to do, isn't it (returning to Cardiff next season)? Surely,”

"As long as Cardiff will have him back, then it seems silly for him to move anywhere else.

“It seems as if he has really enjoyed his time in Wales, so moving him out of that environment would seem silly.

“The only thing I would say is, Chelsea do like to loan players to (sister club) Strasbourg, but a season in the Championship surely makes more sense."

Cardiff City would surely love Chelsea, Omari Kellyman transfer return

Vincent has noted that he believes a potential loan return could depend on the condition that Cardiff want Kellyman to be a part of their plans to re-establish themselves in the Championship next season, although it seems safe to assume that Barry-Murphy would love to seal a second successive agreement with the Chelsea prodigy.

As the season has progressed, Kellyman has only grown in importance, impact, maturity and even versatility, the latter of which has been among the ex-England youth international's most eye-catching attributes.

His ability to operate in a multitude of attacking positions at such a young age in a first senior loan is rather remarkable, it must be said, and losing Kellyman would potentially leave Cardiff with more than one gap to fill.

Kellyman's creativity, one-v-one qualities and ever-increasing composure infront of goal has given a new dynamic to the Bluebirds' attack throughout the second-half of the campaign, and there's little doubt that he's a player with more than enough natural ability and positional flexibility to adapt to the intensified demands of Championship football.

Exactly where that takes place remains up in the air but it does feel likely that, one way or another, Kellyman will be in the second-tier next term and one can only imagine that Barry-Murphy will be doing everything in his power to ensure that's under his leadership once more.
