Chemsdine Talbi delivered a major World Cup moment as Morocco progressed on penalties after a late equaliser against the Netherlands, ending the Dutch campaign.

Sunderland Echo notes it was a night of mixed emotions from a Wearside perspective. Brian Brobbey led the line in Ronald Koeman’s 3-4-2-1 and was withdrawn after 71 minutes for Wout Weghorst as the Dutch tried to manage the closing stages.

The Sunderland winger came off the bench to tee up the late leveller that forced extra time, then converted in the shootout.

Robin Roefs was in the Netherlands squad but did not feature, with Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen starting. Lutsharel Geertruida, who spent last season on loan at Sunderland, also remained unused.

Brobbey’s exit capped a largely positive personal tournament. His earlier brace was among Sunderland’s standout World Cup stories, and starting a knockout tie underlined his growing reputation.

Talbi, meanwhile, was the headline act, his contribution on the global stage reinforcing a rising status after an impressive first season on Wearside.

Elsewhere, Omar Alderete’s Paraguay also advanced on penalties. The Sunderland defender missed the match with a knee injury.
