Birmingham City recently overcame a poor run of form to beat Portsmouth 4-0.

Blues arrived in the Championship with a large amount of hype surrounding them, after winning the League One title in record-breaking fashion last term.

Chris Davies’ side took this ambitious attitude into the transfer market, spending big money on operators such as Kyogo Furuhashi and Marvin Ducksch alongside loan deals for Tommy Doyle, Patrick Roberts and Eiran Cashin.

Many expected Birmingham to fight for the promotion-paying positions immediately, but that hasn’t proven to be the case. After picking up seven points from their first three matches, the Second City side would only win three of their next 11 clashes in all competitions.

This subsequently saw them tumble down the Championship table and led to increased pressure being piled upon Davies for not turning things around.

A 1-0 away victory against Preston North End brought an end to a run of four league matches without a win, but Blues were largely on the back foot at Deepdale and were somewhat fortunate to escape the contest with three points.

However, a 4-0 triumph over Portsmouth was much more convincing and signalled that Davies may have finally gotten to the bottom of what was preventing his side from being more competitive.

Football League World’s Birmingham City fan pundit, Jason Moore, believes that Davies must keep recording these types of results to reinforce his job security, following such a poor run of form in recent times.

“As good as the result was, people can't look over the fact that it's three wins in 11 matches,” stated Jason. “Let's take the win, take the positives because it was really, really good.

“But for me, he's still under a bit of pressure from fans. Obviously, wins get rid of that pressure. But it is still three wins in 11. He's got to beat Millwall. He's got to try and get a draw against Boro.

“He will get the time from the board no matter what. But from a Blues fan perspective, you'll have a split. I think he's still under pressure because of the demands of where this club wants to go and it doesn't matter what league you're in.

“3 wins in 11 is not good enough. So as good as the performance was, it has got to be better.”

Birmingham City must kick on from their Portsmouth win

After Birmingham City’s recent slump in form, major questions started presenting themselves about Davies’ future and whether he was the right man to lead the Second City side forward.

Arguably, these queries had solid backing. Blues had spent heavily in the summer and supporters wanted to see that directly translate to results on the pitch.

Although Birmingham have picked up six points from their last three matches, Davies still isn’t off the hook, as proven by Jason’s comments.

With Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton all struggling this term, there is a real possibility for three unlikely candidates to capture a surprise promotion to the Premier League.

There is still time for Blues to get in that mix, which is why the St. Andrew’s faithful are so insistent on consistently strong outings from Davies’ side.
