The Austrian national team are sweating over the fitness of one of their most important attacking players, RB Leipzig's Christoph Baumgartner, ahead of the World Cup.

The attacking midfielder was set to start Austria's 1-0 friendly victory over Tunisia on Monday but was forced to withdraw after experiencing discomfort during the warm-up.

“Unfortunately, it doesn’t look good for him,” Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick said after the match, according to Krone Zeitung.

Rangnick provided more information on the injury in a separate interview with Sky.

“We still have to wait and see what’s going on with Baumi. We won’t know until tomorrow how serious the injury is. Hopefully it’s not too serious. He felt a sharp pain when taking a shot at goal. It seems to be more in the hip flexor area,” he said, according to Sky.

Austria also suffered another injury concern during the match, with defensive leader David Alaba forced off at halftime after feeling “slight muscle tightness,” Rangnick explained.

Both Baumgartner and Alaba have around two weeks to recover before Austria open their World Cup campaign against Jordan on June 17.
