While we didn’t get three victories for Belgian clubs in Europe this week, there were certainly plenty of positive to take away for all three clubs.

Union St Gilloise battle in Madrid

Union St Gilloise showed plenty of fight and should arguably have come away with at least a point against Atletico Madrid away from home. David Hubert was proud of his side, while Rob Schoofs put the result down to a ‘lesson in efficiency‘. Union only took one of their chances, late on through Ross Sykes as they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat. Lessons from back to back 4-0 defeats to Newcastle and Inter respectively appear to have been learnt. Next up for Union is an away trip to Galatasaray at the end of November.

Classic at the Jan Breydel between Barcelona and Club Brugge

Club Brugge and Barcelona played out one of the games of the Champions League week at the Jan Breydel. Club Brugge certainly held their own against the Catalan side in a game that ended 3-3. Carlos Forbs was in fine form for Club Brugge as he tormented the Barcelona defence. The former Wolves and Ajax winger grabbed two goals and an assist, with Nicolo Tresoldi the other scorer. However, the excellent Lamine Yamal showcased his talent with a fine goal as Barcelona continued to peg Club Brugge back. Next up for Club Brugge is a clash with Sporting in Lisbon.

Genk shock Braga in Portugal

Genk absorbed plenty of pressure in Portugal as they battle to an impressive 4-3 victory over Braga in another classic European clash. Daan Heymans grabbed an equaliser for the side just before half-time and clearly Thorsten Fink had an inspired team talk during the break. The side immediately took the lead through Yira Sor before Hyeon-Gyo Oh made it 3-1. Braga did make it 3-2 shortly after, but Genk responded immediately through substitute Yaimar Medina. Genk grabbed their second win in the competition and inflicted a first defeat for Braga. Genk welcome Basel to Belgium next time out.
