Could Liverpool strike a massive €85m agreement? They're looking into it - but the selling club thinks it's crazy.
Liverpool will look at their midfield this summer as they continue the overhaul started in 2025. The Reds spent an awful lot of money ahead of this season - but didn't really change their midfield much at all.
That will change later this year. The process started with Ryan Gravenberch's new mega-contract and will move forward with arrivals and exits.
Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister are both linked with departures. And perhaps now we know one midfielder who could arrive. Liverpool like the look of Victor Froholdt of FC Porto and reports continue to develop that they're considering a move for the 20-year-old.
Frohodlt only actually signed for the club at the start of the season but his incredible form has Premier League clubs looking into a deal. Liverpool are among them, however there's a catch.
Porto don't want to sell Froholdt and will point clubs to his release clause, standing at €83m. Correio da Manhã says it's considered at the club to be a ridiculous price and that should a club like Liverpool pay it, it would represent a proper headloss.
After all, Froholdt moved for €20m in 2025. Paying quadruple that on the back of one season? That does seem insane. Then again, crazier moves have happened.
So let's see what Liverpool do.
FC Porto Performance and Stats
As of 10 May 2026, Victor Froholdt has enjoyed a breakout debut season with FC Porto following his €20 million move from FC Copenhagen last summer. The 20-year-old Danish midfielder has established himself as a "key piece" in Francesco Farioli's system, recording eight goals and seven assists across all competitions. In Liga Portugal, he has logged 2,762 minutes and maintains an impressive 7.34 FotMob rating, ranking among the league's top box-to-box midfielders. Most recently, he played the full 90 minutes in a 1–0 win over Alverca on 2 May and scored in a 2–1 victory against Tondela on 19 April.
Transfer Speculation
Froholdt’s rapid development has made him a high-priority target for the Premier League. Arsenal, Liverpool, and Newcastle United have all been credited with strong interest ahead of the summer window. While Porto are reportedly resistant to a sale—pointing to his €85 million release clause—reports suggest a bid in the region of €40–50 million might be required to test their resolve. For his part, Froholdt has expressed a desire to remain at Porto to play Champions League football next season.
