Paris Saint-Germain 4-0 Real Madrid

Paris Saint-Germain booked their place in the FIFA Club World Cup final with yet another resounding victory over a major European rival, this time crushing Real Madrid 4-0 in New Jersey.

Gonçalo Ramos capped off the night with a goal from the substitute’s bench, leading to an emotional tribute to Diogo Jota, as Ramos became the latest player to perform one of Jota’s celebrations in honour of his Seleção teammate.

The match was highly-anticipated, but in truth PSG ensured it was a formality by racing into a 2-0 lead inside 9 minutes. Sloppy defending from both Raúl Asencio and Antonio Rudiger allowed Spanish midfielder Fabián Ruiz (6') and star man Ousmane Dembélé (9’) to give the European champions a commanding advantage.

Ruiz all but ended the contest with a third on 24 minutes, meaning PSG were able to manage the game comfortably for the remainder of the afternoon. From a Portuguese perspective, a first-half highlight was more supreme defending by Nuno Mendes, who showed great pace to retrieve the ball from Vinicius Jr when the Brazilian was preparing an attempt on goal.

PSG boss Luis Enrique had started with Portuguese trio Nuno Mendes, Vitinha and João Neves. At the half-time break, Neves was withdrawn, while Nuno Mendes was rested late on; Ramos’ introduction just before the hour mark provided the former Benfica man the chance to get on the scoresheet and he duly obliged with a calm finish, followed by the gesture to his late friend.

PSG will meet Chelsea in the final on Sunday, where they will be strong favourites to add a world title to their list of accomplishments.
