As is the case for every player, on Rafael Leao’s day, there are few wingers better than him in the world. Unfortunately, AC Milan have not seen the star’s ‘day’ as often as required, and there are questions about whether he can become a great at the club.

The debate about Leao is ongoing. Many believe he still can be the next player to enter the list of Milan icons, whilst others believe that he should be sold whilst his value remains at its peak. He is certainly a polarising figure.

This is where the frustration comes in. Whichever camp you are in, Leao’s quality is known, and this causes such annoyance when he falls below that level, because he has it in his locker. The question now is how to get that locker open consistently – after all, that has been the glaring issue with the winger for a few years now.

A consistent Leao would be effectively a new signing for the Diaolo, and this is why Calciomercato.com questions if he can ever be a Milan great, or whether they should cash in.

At present, there are two key issues with Leao. Firstly, there are technical issues, which link to Paulo Fonseca’s coaching, and then, there is the mental/emotional side of things – the star often looks uninterested through his body language, and there seems to be no enthusiasm.

So far this season, he has recorded four contributions – a goal and three assists – at this point last season, he had three goals and four assists showing there is a very clear problem currently. A problem that needs solving.

However, the antidote is unclear, and Milan must discover whether it lies within the Portuguese winger, or the Portuguese head coach.
