Barcelona ended up bringing in Marcus Rashford as their main offensive reinforcement this summer, but there was little doubt that he was not their first choice. Colombia star Luis Diaz has confirmed that he was in talks with Barcelona before making his move to Bayern Munich this summer.

Diaz, 28, moved to Bayern at the end of July in exchange for €70m. The former Liverpool winger was linked to Barcelona the previous summer, and was even cited as the first choice for Director of Football Deco, with the Catalan giants pursuing both Diaz and Nico Williams for the past two summers.

Following Bayern Munich’s 3-1 win over Chelsea, Diaz spoke to Movistar+, and was asked about his summer transfer. Sport relayed his answers.

“Colombians always support me. Today I saw the national team flags and my shirt, so I’m very happy for all the support. Very happy to be at this great club. There were conversations (with Barça), just like everyone else during the market, with several teams. I’m very calm about this decision. I made an objective decision for my future, and the important thing is that I joined a big club. So, that’s it, just try to give my all for them now.”

Marcus Rashford arrived instead

With little in the way of major sales, Barcelona’s ability to make major signings in the transfer market was limited this summer. The Blaugrana ended up using a board guarantee in order to ensure that Rashford, Marc Bernal, Gerard Martin, Roony Bardghji and Joan Garcia were registered with the first team this year.

Rashford arrived on loan from Manchester United as an alternative option, after holding out for a move to Catalonia. It is believed that Barcelona have a €30-35m buy option on the England international. He has had a discreet but positive start to life at Barcelona, providing his first assist in his fourth appearance.
