If there’s one thing that Ligue 1 does well it’s produce really technically solid, athletically superb central midfielders who are ready to shine in the Premier League.
Chelsea’s model now is to try and sign them up before one of the big French teams turn them into the finished product, but you also can’t turn down a more developed prospect who looks ready to slot into a team right away. Fans are already frustrated by the rolling excuse that this is a young team in the process of improving – they want some instant results to make sure we stay competitive.
That doesn’t mean signing 31 year olds – just a 21 year old with a couple of years of senior experience to his name rather than more teenagers.
So it will be very interesting to see if the club make serious their reported interest in Lamine Camara of Monaco. CaughtOffside are among the sources today writing that the Blues are very much in the mix to sign him, along with Liverpool and Tottenham.
In fact, about half the Premier League are named – Brighton, Villa, Man City, Newcastle. Plus, of course, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, two other teams who have had big success building their engine room with French based players.

Chelsea have three good central midfielders, but given Romeo Lavia can’t stay fit, there’s a strong sense they could do with another. 21 year old Camara, who has shone for Monaco. He has the legs to defend and cover space with the technique to do damage on the ball – his Wikipedia page somehow compares him to both N’Golo Kante and James Ward-Prowse.
Now that’s a combination we’d like to see.
Despite his tender years, he has 23 Senegal caps and 6 goals. He looks set to be a star – bring him in, Blues!
