Comeback in the DFB team? World Cup door still open for Manuel Neuer

The discussion surrounding Manuel Neuer and a possible return to the German national team continues to gather pace and remains exciting despite clear statements from the Bayern captain. The 40-year-old has officially ruled out a DFB comeback recently, but the issue still does not seem to be completely over

A turbulent week has further fuelled the debate. While Neuer was the match winner in the first leg against Real Madrid with several brilliant saves, he showed unusual uncertainties in the second leg. His early misplaced pass before the 0:1 and unfortunate behaviour when conceding the second goal caused discussion – but did nothing to change the fact that many experts remain convinced of his exceptional class

Choice of words leaves room for speculation

The 2014 world champion’s choice of words is particularly striking. In his statements, Neuer often says that a comeback is „currently“ not an issue. A small nuance that leaves room for interpretation

In plain language, this means that the situation could well change again in the coming weeks

A possible scenario is by no means new in German soccer: Toni Kroos surprisingly returned to the national team just before the 2024 European Championship at home – despite previously declaring his retirement

A similar scenario for Neuer does not seem out of the question either, although it would require a clear signal from national coach Julian Nagelsmann, as BILD recently revealed

Neuer has not yet planned a summer vacation

Former national team keeper Roman Weidenfeller brought additional momentum to the debate, suggesting that Neuer is indeed thinking internally about his future: there are indications that the Bayern captain has not yet finalized his plans and is possibly keeping his participation in the World Cup open: „I’ve heard from those closest to him that he hasn’t yet finalized his summer vacation plans, that he might still be working something out. You don’t know. Even in a situation like this, you have a certain mental cinema and think about how best to implement something,“ he explained in an interview with Sky

According to BILD, the door to the World Cup is not completely closed – but only on one condition: Nagelsmann would have to actively approach Neuer and want to bring him back

One thing is clear: the ball is currently not only in Neuer’s court, but above all in the national coach’s. While the Bayern keeper has publicly signaled his reluctance, behind the scenes it seems that not everything has been decided yet

For FC Bayern, the focus is already on the coming weeks with crucial matches in the league, cup and Champions League. But at the same time, one question remains that will continue to occupy German soccer: will Manuel Neuer make a comeback on the big stage?
