The election day is here for Barcelona and the race for the club’s next presidential figure will be settled later today.
Ahead of the polling, however, Catalonia has erupted into mayhem with chaos coming from the club and the presidential candidates Joan Laporta and Victor Font.
A major part of that controversy erupted when Joan Laporta filed a complaint with the electoral board of Barcelona against his opponent Font for allegedly breaching the code of the club’s elections.
The day before polling, after all, is mandated to be a day of silence with candidates prohibited from directly reaching out to voters.
Font, however, sent emails to club members once again urging them to vote for him tomorrow.
Striking back in his defence after Laporta’s complaint, Font soon came out with blazing defence on what had occurred as relayed by Mundo Deportivo.
The presidential pre-candidate clarified that the communication sent to members from his side had no intent of swaying votes and was just a gentle reminder to ensure a good turnout and to remind members of voting-related information.
He also claimed that the said interview had been conducted on Tuesday last week and that it was beyond his control when and where it would be published.
In response to all the mayhem around, Barcelona officially released a statement urging candidates to follow the code and respect the club’s regulations regarding the elections.
“In the face of certain events that have occurred this Saturday, March 14, the Club and the Electoral Board are forced to publicly remind that any publicity or campaign act that has been carried out on March 14 and/or that occurs from now on until the end of the voting day constitutes a lack of respect for our members, in addition to a serious breach of article 52 of the Statutes,” the statement reads.
