AC Milan were unable to win their second trophy of the season against Bologna tonight, and it seems like it will be the start of several changes.

As a game, the Rossoneri have probably lost many like tonight’s this season. They have started to a decent level and then fallen off. Unfortunately, when Bologna scored, there was no reply. Frustratingly, there was not even a sign of one.

Being on the losing side is a part of football, of course. But the frustrations tonight are due to the same mistakes occurring, never being learnt from.

After the game, Sergio Conceicao spoke to SportMediaset about the result, the season and the future, and his words have been relayed by Milan News.

A dark night, Milan had started well… Then the light went out. What short-circuited?

“I absolutely disagree. The first half was balanced. In the second half we could have done more, after Bologna’s goal there was very little play. I don’t want to find alibis with the referee. But I don’t want to say it, otherwise they’ll say I’m finding excuses.

“We should have done more in a match like this. Now let’s finish this championship with dignity and think about Roma. I’m sorry for the fans and for all those who were enthusiastic about the team. Disappointment for everyone, we could have done more, these are games that are decided in the details.

“They scored, we didn’t”.

Would you make the same training choices again?

“In the end, we are all good. Before the game, I did what I had to do, I was fair to myself, with the preparation we did. Now it’s different, we know what didn’t work but that’s part of football.”

The defenders had a hard time setting up. You never managed to get going again. What do you mean when you say disappointment?

“Yes, we had a free goalkeeper but we rushed to play in a direct way: we had prepared the build-up differently. In the first 25 minutes we weren’t even bad, then we could have done more in this sense here.

“It was a very combative match, in every duel we had to give everything and think that it could be decisive. I think it’s a bit of a mirror of this season. I have to compliment Bologna because they played a good match in this sense here.”

Will he still be at Milan next year?

“See you on Sunday in Rome.”

The Portuguese also spoke to Milan News.

In the other matches his Milan had his fighting spirit…

“Disappointment for a title lost. Disappointment for everyone, for us and for the fans. It was a competitive match. We could have scored two goals in the first half and we didn’t. They created from dead balls.

“In the second half we should have done a little more. Then there was very little playing: substitutions, players on the ground. Typical of a final… I don’t want to take credit away from Bologna, but there was little playing.

“Even some refereeing decisions… I don’t want to find excuses. A man can also make mistakes. A typical match of a final: whoever scored had a big advantage to win”.

Future?

“I understand the curiosity, but I have so many thoughts about this match: the choices I made, what went well and what didn’t. I haven’t started in football for two days. Right now my mind is trying to understand what didn’t go well today.

“There’s nothing to do because we lost, but we have to finish the season with dignity. Then we’ll talk.”

Could this company have done more?

“At the end of the day I think I gave everything I can give. Today I could have done a little more, but after the match: at the end of the match we are all good. The analyses must be done afterwards.

“We are always judged by the results. I have to do my analyses and those who work at Milan will do their analyses. Then the context and environment can be said to have not been easy. The pressure is strong on everyone.

“In the end you have to do the math.”

Are you the only one responsible?

“It’s not important to go hunting for who is more responsible. I am certainly the leader of the team and I put my face to it. Since I arrived here, I have tried to do the best I can.”

From a man who has been so coy this season, his replies to questions about his future are not unexpected. But it certainly feels like this was the final blow. Tonight was certainly a sign that things need to change.
