Negotiations over a new deal for the Frenchman have been ongoing for close to 18 months, and the defender has expressed his desire to agree a new deal with the club.

Progress has been slow though, and the Reds are running out of time to reach an agreement before the 26-year-old becomes a free agent.

An agreement appeared to be closer than ever, but fans are still awaiting an official announcement because there are two big hold ups.

Thats’s according to TEAMtalk, who claim that the agent’s fees and the signing-on fee have been sticking points in negotiations and are the two reasons that Konate hasn’t put pen to paper yet.

All the other terms of the contract have been agreed in principle but if the two parties can’t come to an agreement over the final two points, then the Frenchman will leave the club for free.

Losing Konate for nothing would be a massive blow to the club, especially as an agreement is so close, so they may be tempted to agree to the player’s demands.

Konate is expected to receive a significant pay rise if an extension is agreed, but time is running out to keep the Frenchman in Merseyside.
