CONMEBOL on Friday released the audio of the exchange between VAR Juan Lara and referee Piero Maza, both from Chile, over the penalty that led to Palmeiras’ 2-1 victory against Sporting Cristal in São Paulo on Thursday in the CONMEBOL Libertadores.

In the incident, Arthur felt contact from Cuenca and went down in the box. Maza initially waved away a penalty, then was called by Lara to review the footage.

On the recording, Lara assesses that both players were running, the player in green had the ball ahead and the opponent made contact from behind, causing him to fall, in a reckless manner.

As Maza reached the monitor, the VAR reiterated that the ball was in front of the green-shirted player and the light-blue opponent clipped his leg recklessly.

After checking the images, Maza awarded a penalty without showing a card.
