Coppa Italia gets new meaning as Milan risk missing out on Europa League

The situation in the standings is looking troubling for AC Milan, who not only risk missing out on the Champions League but also the Europa League. As such, the Coppa Italia could become a crucial lifeline for the Rossoneri.
After beating Sassuolo in the round of 16 and Roma in the quarter-finals, Milan will be up against city rivals Inter in the semi-final. On the other side of the knockout tree, Bologna will take on Empoli for what is a surprising semi-final pairing to say the least.
Although the big clubs normally only see the Coppa Italia as a way to clinch a trophy and earn some glory, as well as beat whoever they are facing, it could be more for Milan this season. Indeed, with a Europa League spot in the pot, they might need to push for it a lot more.
Milan are currently in eighth place in the Serie A standings, eight points behind the top four and six points off the Europa League. Even the Conference League is four points away, so not even that is certain for the Rossoneri.
In short, should the struggles continue in the league, then the Coppa Italia could suddenly become the only way for Milan to clinch Europa League football. How the mighty have fallen…
