Valencia’s defensive crisis eased on Friday as José Copete and Eray Cömert returned to full training, offering Carlos Corberán timely relief before facing RCD Espanyol on Saturday. According to Superdeporte, injuries to Mouctar Diakhaby and César Tárrega had already left the back line badly depleted while the club waits on urgent reinforcements.
The picture darkened earlier in the week when Copete and Cömert also missed training, leaving Corberán without a single available centre-back.
Friday’s session provided breathing space, with the head coach otherwise readying a makeshift rearguard, even considering Pepelu or Foulquier, or both, in the middle.
Both centre-backs trained with the group and the plan is that they could be involved on Saturday. For the Andalusian, a start is assured if he is fit, and he is the side’s most in-form centre-back.
For the Swiss, a start is also expected, though Corberán has alternatives, from dropping Pepelu into defence to switching to a back three. On paper a back four appears likeliest, with Jesús Vázquez at left-back to cover Gayà’s suspension.
