Corinthians beaten by Palmeiras in Itaquera after three years

Throughout the night of last Sunday (8), Corinthians hosted Palmeiras at the Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the seventh round of the first phase of the 2026 Campeonato Paulista, and was defeated by a score of 1-0. With this result, the Alvinegro remained in fifth place on the overall table with 11 points (three wins, two draws, and two losses – nine goals scored and six conceded).

The defeat put an end to an important streak for the club from Parque São Jorge. That’s because Corinthians had not lost to their archrival playing in Itaquera for over three years. Previously, the last defeat had been on August 13, 2022. On that day, the Alvinegro hosted their rival at home and was beaten 1-0, in the second round of that year’s Campeonato Brasileiro.

Since then, before last Sunday’s match, there had been six games between Corinthians and Palmeiras at Neo Química Arena, with two wins for Corinthians and four draws – six goals scored and three conceded. Two of those six games were particularly memorable for the club from Parque São Jorge, since in 2025, at home, they won the Paulistão over their archrival after a goalless draw and, in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil round of 16, defeated Alviverde 1-0.

Despite the defeat, Corinthians still holds the advantage over their archrival in matches at the Arena – inaugurated in 2014. Now, in 24 games, there have been nine wins for the Alvinegro, eight draws, and seven losses – 23 goals scored and 22 conceded. Dorival Júnior’s squad now turns its focus back to the Campeonato Brasileiro. Next Thursday, at 8pm (Brasília time), the Corinthians team will host RB Bragantino in Itaquera, for the third round of the national tournament.
