Corinthians climb the Brasileirão table despite away draw against Cruzeiro

Corinthians took to the field on Wednesday night (25th), at Mineirão Stadium, to face Cruzeiro in the fourth round of the 2026 Brazilian Championship, and ended up drawing 1-1. The Alvinegro was losing the match until the 35th minute of the second half, when João Pedro Tchoca scored a header after a corner kick from midfielder Rodrigo Garro on the left.

The result, even though it was a draw, made Corinthians jump from fifth to third place in the national competition with seven points – two wins, one draw, and one loss – within the qualification zone for the 2027 Libertadores. In addition, they have scored five goals and conceded three.

Meanwhile, Palmeiras and São Paulo share the lead in the Brasileirão with 10 points each, with Alviverde holding the advantage on goal difference (seven to four). Behind Corinthians and in the top half of the tournament table are: Bahia, Fluminense, Athletico-PR, Red Bull Bragantino, also with seven points, as well as Grêmio (six), Chapecoense, and Mirassol, with five points and one game in hand.

It’s worth noting that, in this round, the matches of Flamengo, Botafogo, and Bahia were postponed, since these teams were/are involved in decisions in international competitions. This Thursday (26th), Rubro Negro will play the second leg of the Recopa Sudamericana final, while the other two played this Wednesday in the preliminary phase of the Libertadores.

Therefore, the fourth round will have just one more match. Santos and Vasco da Gama, the bottom two teams with one point each, face off this Thursday (26th), at 7pm (Brasília time), at Vila Belmiro. After securing the draw against Cruzeiro at Mineirão in the fourth round of the Brasileirão, Corinthians turns its focus back to the Paulista Championship.

Next Saturday (28th), at 8:30pm (Brasília time), the Alvinegro faces Novorizontino at the Jorge Ismael de Biasi Stadium, in the semifinal of the state championship. A draw will take the decision to penalty kicks.
