Corinthians extend impressive quarter-final record in Campeonato Paulista

Corinthians faced Portuguesa on the evening of last Sunday (22) at the Canindé Stadium, in a single match for the quarterfinals of the 2026 Campeonato Paulista, and drew 1-1 in regular time. The goal for the Alvinegro was scored by forward Vitinho in the added time of the second half. In the penalty shootout, Corinthians triumphed with a score of 8-7.

Corinthians' qualification extended the team's positive record in the Campeonato Paulista quarterfinals. The first time this stage was held in the state championship was in 2003 – when the club from Parque São Jorge defeated União Barbarense 2-0 – and it returned only in 2011. Throughout its history, the Alvinegro has played this stage 15 times and failed to advance only twice: 2012 and 2023.

In the first year, they were eliminated from the Campeonato Paulista after being defeated by Ponte Preta at Pacaembu, with a score of 3-2. However, in that season, the Alvinegro ended up winning the Libertadores and the Club World Cup, against Boca Juniors from Argentina and Chelsea from England. In the second instance, they were eliminated in Itaquera by Ituano in a penalty shootout, losing 7-6 after a 1-1 draw in regular time.

During this period, it is worth mentioning that Corinthians missed the knockout stage only in 2014 and 2024. In the first instance, they finished third in Group B with 24 points, four less than the second-placed Ituano, who had 28, the same as the group leader, Botafogo-SP. In the second instance, they only accumulated 14 points in Group C of the state championship, three behind Inter de Limeira, who ended up second in the group. The leader at the time was RB Bragantino, with 21 points.

In other words, out of the 15 times Corinthians played in the quarterfinals of the Paulistão, the club from Parque São Jorge advanced to the semifinals 13 times, the last being this past Sunday (22) against Portuguesa. In 2025, the Alvinegro faced Mirassol at the Neo Química Arena and won 2-0, with goals from forwards Ángel Romero and Memphis Depay. It is worth remembering that the Alvinegro is the current and greatest state champion with 31 titles – the last one won against archrival Palmeiras.
