New York mayor Zohran Mamdani was presented with a Corinthians shirt honouring the club’s democracy movement after he referenced Sócrates while discussing the World Cup.

According to Meu Timao, Mamdani raised Corinthians Democracy on his programme The Morning Pitch as Brazil met Morocco, recalling its influence during the dictatorship. It was the first World Cup match staged in the city.

He highlighted football’s power to unite and connect people. He was also given a plaque recognising his role in sharing the club’s story internationally.

The club sought contact through Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then turned to Casagrande, who is in the United States, to facilitate the meeting. A video published by UOL showed Casagrande also gifting two 2025/26 shirts, one bearing his name and another with Sócrates.

Corinthians board member Vinícius Cascone recorded the moment on his social media.

Separately, the 1980s initiative is being developed as an HBO series, planned for 8 episodes focusing on Sócrates, Wladimir, Casagrande and Adílson Monteiro Alves, the football director who helped build the movement.
