Corinthians likelier to be relegated than reach Libertadores, says UFMG

Corinthians was defeated by Flamengo at home last Sunday, the 28th, and fell in the Brasileirão standings. One of the club's goals was to be in the upper part of the table, but the mission became difficult after two consecutive stumbles, losing the chance to score points.

According to the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), which calculates the probabilities of the clubs in the Brasileirão, the People's Team has a higher chance of being relegated to Serie B, with 15.3%, than going to the 2026 Libertadores, adding up to only 1.6%.

Despite the worrying numbers, Corinthians still has a probability of competing in a continental competition, the Copa Sudamericana, with a 36.7% chance of entering the tournament. In the Brasileirão, the teams ranked between seventh and twelfth place earn the spot.

It's worth mentioning that, if any club among the top six wins the Copa do Brasil or the Libertadores, a spot in the latter is added to the Brasileirão standings. That is, the seventh place gets the right to compete in the main tournament of the continent.

In pursuit of getting closer to the spot, just like last year, Corinthians will have to end the drought and will have Internacional as the next opponent to try to recover. The interstate classic takes place this Wednesday, October 1st, at Beira-Rio, starting at 7:30 pm (Brasília time).
