Corinthians overturn ban, fans and key duo set for Paulista opener

Corinthians has good news for the start of the 2026 Campeonato Paulista. The club managed to overturn two penalties imposed by the Supreme Court of Sports Justice (STJD) and will have fans in the stands at the Neo Química Arena next Sunday (11), at 4 pm (Brasília time), against Ponte Preta, for the first round of the state championship.

The information was initially reported by journalist Samir Carvalho. The club from Parque São Jorge, it is worth remembering, had been punished in April last year for the use of flares, fireworks (in the North sector), and throwing objects onto the field during the added time of the 2025 Campeonato Paulista final against Palmeiras, in Itaquera.

Initially, Corinthians would face Ponte Preta with closed doors. The Majestic classic against São Paulo, on the other hand, on January 18 (Sunday), at 4 pm, for the third round of the state championship, would only have the North sector of the Neo Química Arena closed. Additionally, according to the journalist, the Alvinegro managed to change the scenarios of the penalties by committing to donate food baskets and will have full capacity at its home for the two mentioned games.

Furthermore, midfielder José Martínez, who had been punished with a four-game suspension for slapping goalkeeper Marcelo Lomba, from Palmeiras, also in the return match of the last Paulistão final – after a confusion caused by Memphis Depay climbing on the ball, was released and will be available for the start of the tournament.

Midfielder Rodrigo Garro, who had been punished with a two-game suspension for misconduct during the same confusion as José Martínez, obtained release and will also not be absent in the first games of the year. Just like the reversal of the fan penalty, the Alvinegro committed to donating food baskets.
