Corinthians have secured a place in the Copa Libertadores last 16 after Platense and Peñarol drew 1-1 at Estadio Ciudad Vicente López. According to Meu Timao, the result means those outside the qualification places can no longer catch them.

The São Paulo side had drawn 1-1 with Independiente Santa Fe on Wednesday night, moving to 10 points. Combined with tonight's stalemate, that left Corinthians out of reach.

Beyond Corinthians, only Independiente Rivadavia of Argentina have already booked a last-16 berth, holding the second-best overall record so far.

Despite sealing progress, Corinthians still have reason to go full strength. They currently top the overall standings and staying there would ensure every second leg in the knockout phase is played at Neo Química Arena.

They return to Libertadores action in two weeks. On Thursday 21 May, Corinthians visit Peñarol at Estadio Campeón del Siglo in Montevideo.

Peñarol will be fighting to stay alive and also need Platense to falter, with the Argentines away to Independiente Santa Fe. Platense require only a draw next round to advance, since Peñarol could still draw level on points but would trail on the head-to-head tiebreak.
