Corinthians shine in recent Copa do Brasil penalty shootouts

Throughout the night of last Sunday (22), Corinthians faced Portuguesa at the Canindé Stadium, in a match valid for the quarterfinals of the 2026 Campeonato Paulista, and in regular time, ended up drawing 1-1. In the penalty shootout, however, the Corinthians team won by a score of 8-7, with Hugo Souza saving two penalties, thus qualifying for the semifinals of the state championship.

The result meant that the Alvinegro reached its eighth consecutive qualification in penalty shootouts, in addition to becoming the team from Serie A and B with the most penalty shootout wins in the 21st century – 17 out of the last 20. The data was released by the pages Estatísticas Corinthianas and R10 Score, both on X, formerly Twitter, respectively.

The first of the eight consecutive penalty shootout victories happened on April 26, 2023. On that day, after losing the first leg to Remo 2-0 in the third round of the Copa do Brasil, the Alvinegro returned the score in Itaquera and, in the shootout, beat their opponent 5-4. Goalkeeper Cássio, one of the greatest idols in Corinthians history and now at Cruzeiro, saved one penalty.

In the same edition of the tournament, in the round of 16, Corinthians overcame Atlético-MG in the penalty shootout 3-1 at Itaquera, after winning in regular time 2-0 and, consequently, overturning the first leg result at Mineirão. In the quarterfinals, also against América-MG, in July 2023, they beat the Minas Gerais team 3-1 on penalties – Cássio saved two shots – after winning 3-2 in regular time at Neo Química Arena. In the first match, Coelho had won 1-0 at Estádio Independência.

That same season, this time in the quarterfinals of the Copa Sudamericana in Argentina, Corinthians beat Estudiantes on penalties by a score of 3-2, after losing 1-0 in regular time. Cássio saved a penalty. In the first match, at Neo Química Arena, the Corinthians team had won by the same score, with a goal from former defender Gil.

In July 2024, in the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil, the club from Parque São Jorge eliminated Grêmio at Couto Pereira, after goalless draws in both matches, by winning the penalty shootout 3-1. Goalkeeper Hugo Souza saved one penalty in the series. In August of the same year, in the round of 16 of the Conmebol Sudamericana, Hugo Souza saved three penalties against RB Bragantino in Itaquera, after the Alvinegro lost 2-1 at home in regular time. In the first leg, the club from Parque São Jorge had achieved the same score in Ribeirão Preto.

Finally, the good streak was extended last Sunday, when Corinthians beat Portuguesa 8-7 in the quarterfinals of the Paulistão, after a 1-1 draw in regular time. In addition to saving a penalty in regular time, Hugo Souza saved two more in the shootout and also reached an impressive milestone for the club this century.
