Corinthians beat Flamengo 2-0 on Sunday at Estádio Mané Garrincha in Brasília to win the Supercopa do Brasil.
According to Globo.com, the competition pairs the previous season's Copa do Brasil and Brasileirão champions.
The trophy was first staged in 1990 in contentious circumstances, involving Vasco da Gama and Grêmio. With no dates available, their 1990 Libertadores group meetings were used to settle it.
Grêmio won at the Olímpico Monumental, drew at São Januário and were crowned, although no trophy was handed over. The second edition saw Corinthians, as Brazilian champions, beat Flamengo, the Copa do Brasil holders, at Morumbi, after which the event was discontinued.
An attempted revival was floated in 2013 for 2015 but fell through due to calendar clashes. During the hiatus, Corinthians and Cruzeiro, the 2018 champions, played two friendlies in the World Cup break, with no silverware on offer. The Supercopa eventually returned in 2020.
Counting 2026, there have been nine editions. The champions are Flamengo with three titles, Corinthians with two, and Grêmio, Atlético-MG, Palmeiras and São Paulo with one apiece.
