Crystal Palace have eyed a move for Robbie Keane, which will make them less likely to appoint Coventry City boss Frank Lampard.

Crystal Palace are set to step up their managerial search amid the growing pressure on Oliver Glasner following Thursday's disappointing draw with Zrinjski Mostar in the Conference League.

The Eagles have previously eyed a move for Coventry City boss Frank Lampard, who has performed largely impressive exploits in the Championship this term.

Lampard's men reclaimed top spot in the second tier when they defeated title rivals Middlesbrough 3-1 last Monday, thanks to Haji Wright's hat-trick.

The Sky Blues are on course to book their spot in next season's Premier League, provided they avoid further slip-ups after enduring a three-game winless streak before their big win over Boro.

Crystal Palace could change Frank Lampard stance as big Robbie Keane update emerges

Crystal Palace were one of English football's big winners last season, as they defeated Manchester City in the FA Cup final, securing a European place in the process.

However, this campaign has turned out very differently for the Eagles, who were infamously beaten by non-league Macclesfield in the third round of the FA Cup last month, and could be dragged into the Premier League relegation battle if their form doesn't improve.

According to talkSPORT, Ferencvaros boss Robbie Keane is a contender to replace Glasner in the Palace dugout.

Keane has earned a strong managerial reputation by leading his side to the Hungarian top-flight title last season, while he is well-known among English football fans, having played for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

TalkSPORT reported last month that Palace had eyed a move for Lampard, whose impressive Championship exploits have seen him receive top-flight admirers.

Therefore, the fact that the Eagles are now eager to swoop for Keane will be music to the ears of Coventry supporters, who will not want the Sky Blues to lose their boss at a vital stage in the season.

Frank Lampard is better served by staying at Coventry City

The news that Palace could appoint Keane rather than Lampard is undoubtedly good news for the Sky Blues, but it should also heavily benefit the Coventry manager's career, too.

Lampard previously performed well in the Premier League in his first stint with Chelsea, guiding the Stamford Bridge outfit to fourth spot following the 2020/21 campaign, even though they were under a transfer embargo.

However, the former England midfielder was sacked by the West Londoners in January 2021, just months before Thomas Tuchel steered the Blues to the Champions League trophy.

Lampard went on to endure a turbulent time in charge of Everton and was sacked by the then relegation-threatened Merseyside club in January 2023, just one year after being appointed.

The 47-year-old's interim spell in charge of Chelsea later in 2023 was similarly poor, but his time in charge of Coventry has seen him reignite his managerial credentials.

Lampard's success with the Sky Blues is hardly surprising, as the former midfielder guided Derby County to the Championship play-off final in 2019, which earned him his initial Stamford Bridge return.

However, the ex-Chelsea player's turbulent stints in charge of both the West London club and Everton suggest that he is better off steering Coventry back to the Premier League, rather than sealing a somewhat premature top-flight return by joining Palace.

The likelihood of a Selhurst Park move has now been significantly lessened by the South Londoners' interest in Keane, which may be best for all parties.
