FLW’s Coventry City fan pundit has revealed what he thinks Dion Dublin would be worth in the modern market.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
During Coventry City's lengthy stint in Division One and the Premier League between 1967 and 2001, Sky Blues supporters were treated to watching a plethora of talented individuals at Highfield Road.
One of those was Dion Dublin, who dazzled the Coventry faithful during his time at the club and cemented himself as one of the greatest players to wear the Sky Blue colours.
It all started back in September 1994 as Coventry struck goal with a bargain deal, bringing Dublin back to the Midlands after an unfortunate injury-ridden spell at Manchester United under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson, for a reported fee of £2m.
He immediately hit the ground running upon signing on the dotted line, scoring in all four of his first league appearances for the club, ending the season with 13 goals to his name, before going one better in his first full campaign.
Dublin was also adorned by the Coventry supporters for his impact in steering the team away from relegation danger.
Their star man netted 13 goals once again across the season, but due to Strachan's defence shipping 54 goals, the club's Premier League status was in serious doubt.
However, the striker netted one of two crucial strikes against Tottenham Hotspur in a vital 2-1 victory at White Hart Lane, and with other results falling in their favour, they survived ahead of Middlesbrough and Sunderland by one and two points respectively.
From that moment on, Dublin thrived with further stability, racking up a tally of 18 goals, which included a hat-trick in a 3-2 win against Chelsea on the opening day of the term.
He ended that season as a joint-golden boot winner, sharing the award with Michael Owen and Chris Sutton.
And after a record of 68 goals and 16 assists from 162 appearances, the frontman made a short switch across the M6 to Aston Villa, as a £5.75m deal with Coventry was agreed for his signature.
Looking back on his exploits for the Sky Blues, FLW’s Coventry City fan pundit has outlined how much Dublin would be worth in the modern market.
Speaking to Football League World, Coventry City fan pundit Chris Deez lauded Dion Dublin’s contributions for the Sky Blues, believing he would have been involved in a big-money move like some of Europe’s top players have undergone during this summer transfer window.
Chris said: "What a player Dion Dublin was. He is part of some of my fondest memories as a Coventry player in the mid-90s. I was born in 1989, so I was around seven or eight around the time that he was playing for us and playing his best football for us. I’ve got very vivid memories of him playing down Highfield Road with the likes of Hadji, Chippo, Whelan, Telfer, and Huckerby.
"He scored a lot of goals for us in that time. He was joint top scorer in the Premier League for one season, not far off scoring one goal every other game, which was very impressive given the calibre of team we were at the time.
"We were floating around anywhere between 10th down to 16th. We weren’t exactly relegation fodder, but we weren’t exactly aiming high either. We were a really fun and exciting team to watch under Gordon Strachan over those few years and Dublin was a huge part of that.
"When you see some of the insane fees players go for these days. Sesko, I think, was 85m (£74m) to Manchester United. Woltemade to Newcastle was a similar price, for unproven players who’ve had one good season abroad.
"I think in today’s game, Dublin, there is some bias, given he was a Coventry player, so I would say he’s worth hundreds and hundreds of millions, but honestly, a good, big player like Dublin, he was pacey, strong, good in the air, worked hard, a clever striker and of course the English tax, I think he’d surely be worth £50m-£70m, and the absolute top teams would definitely be in for him, the Man City’s and the Arsenal’s."
Dion Dublin was the definition of consistent during his time at Coventry City, with the Sky Blues profiting on his misfortunes at Manchester United and gaining such a clinical frontman on their books.
Dublin’s goals were so important to helping Coventry establish themselves in the big time, and even when there was a prospect of relegation, he stepped up in high pressure moments to deliver the goods and helped steer them clear of the dreaded dropzone.
While his move to Aston Villa at the time would have been viewed as controversial, Coventry fans now look back on just the good moments with Dublin at Highfield Road, with the now 56-year-old demonstrating electric pace, a bullish physicality and a devastating eye for goal that made him a roaring success at the top of the English game.
Coventry fans will be grateful they witnessed a world-class player represent them in their prime when he signed, and he will definitely go down as one of the greatest-ever buys in their history.
