Coventry City have made an outstanding start to their 2025/26 Championship campaign as the Sky Blues currently sit pretty at the top of the table with 19 points on the board after nine games at the turn of the October international break.

Their goalscoring form has been devastating, to say the least, having already found the net 27 times, with the likes of attacking options Haji Wright and Brandon Thomas-Asante enjoying terrific seasons with eight goal contributions each to their name. That has been aided by Victor Torp and Jack Rudoni in behind them. The latter being sidelined for the past three games now.

With Rudoni out of action, Josh Eccles seemed to be the chosen man by Lampard to take his place. But after being forced off against Millwall at the beginning of the month, the central attacking midfield position has been most recently occupied by Ephron Mason-Clark.

The natural wideman was replaced by Ellis Simms just shy of the hour mark in their 0-5 thumping of Sheffield Wednesday, and Lampard will hope that playing Mason-Clark out of position doesn't last too much longer.

The Sky Blues who are currently operating without a natural 'number 10' due to injury concerns, will hope for a speedy recovery to both Rudoni and Eccles.

With Rudoni's return date still unknown at this stage, Coventry boss Lampard gave an update on his first-choice midfielder when speaking to CoventryLive. Lampard said: "He’s got a calf problem, and it’s going to be weeks. I’m not going to put an absolute number on it, but it’s going to be weeks, which is a big disappointment for us, obviously, because of the level of player he is for us."

"He took a bang on his shoulder last weekend [at Leicester] which meant he was off for the first half of the week. And when he tried to come back at the end of the week he’s hurt his calf.”

As for Eccles, Lampard hopes that their Coventry-born Mr.Reliable, will be back in action after the break in time for their next clash at the CBS Arena against Blackburn Rovers. However, after almost recovering from his Gluteal muscle injury, Mason-Clark retaining his position for another week could well be the wisest option.

Despite having injury concerns with the likes of Rudoni, Eccles, as well as Swedish goalkeeper Oliver Dovin being a long-term absentee, the Sky Blues still have more than enough talent in their ranks to pick up from where they left off prior to the international break.

With Coventry having scored 12 goals in their past three games without reply, it has made them a force to be reckoned with in attacking as well as the defensive areas. Lampard certainly has created a well-oiled machine.

In the midst of promotion talks even at this early stage of the season, the Sky Blues must stay grounded, as highlighted by the loss of Rudoni and Eccles.

As aforementioned, Lampard will hope to get his side back to full strength in the near future if they are to solidify their position in the top spots. With only one point separating themselves and fellow high-flyers Middlesbrough, any disruption to their lineup could disrupt the rhythm that Coventry currently have.
