Coventry City are reportedly closing in on the capture of midfielder Daniel Pereira from MLS outfit Austin FC

Coventry City are closing in on their third signing of the summer transfer window in the form of Austin FC midfielder Daniel Pereira, who is now set to link up with Frank Lampard's side ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

As reported by journalist German Garcia Grova of Tyc Sports via X on Thursday afternoon, Lampard is poised to complete the signing of Pereira as Coventry look to explore overseas markets in a bid to bolster the squad at the disposal of the former Derby County and Chelsea head coach to ignite a fresh promotion charge next term.

It has been a somewhat quiet transfer window to date at the CBS Arena, with full-backs Miguel Angel Brau and Kaine Kesler-Hayden representing the two acquisitions currently completed by the Sky Blues.

Further reinforcements are needed if Coventry are to successfully dust off any lingering cobwebs from the side's agonising play-off semi-final defeat to Sunderland and record a second consecutive top-six finish as they look to realise their dream of returning to the Premier League, though, and one is seemingly set to arrive in Pereira.

Coventry City set to seal £3m transfer for Austin FC's Daniel Pereira

According to the aforementioned update, Pereira is close to becoming a Coventry player with the "negotiation" of his services believed to be in the region of $4 million (£2.98 million).

Pereira represents an unknown quantity on British shores, with the 25-year-old having spent the entirety of his professional club career playing in the MLS with Austin.

The central midfielder has made 17 appearances and counting in the current 2025 MLS campaign, recording one goal and one assist apiece for Nico Estevez's side. He has featured for Austin on 142 occasions overall, but may have made his final appearance in today's 2-1 victory away to LA Galaxy.

Born in Venezuela before moving to the United States as a teenager, Pereira also has international pedigree and has earned seven caps for the Venezuela national team since making his debut back in 2023.

Coventry City have serious midfield strength in depth - Daniel Pereira only adds to it

The midfield engine room is perhaps not an area of immediate concern for Coventry supporters, who would much rather see an upgrade sourced on striker Ellis Simms after a difficult campaign infront of goal alongside a new goalkeeper following Oliver Dovin's cruciate ligament injury last term, of which he is still sidelined.

Fans may well believe that the reported outlay on Pereira - not an insignificant sum by any stretch of the imagination, of course - is money that could have been spent better by addressing more pressing issues in the side, but what is less open for debate is that Lampard now has an even stronger clutch of midfield options to call upon.

Pereira plays deeper in midfield and will provide competition to the likes of Matt Grimes, Ben Sheaf, Victor Torp, Josh Eccles and even Jamie Allen.

It's going to leave Lampard with something of a selection headache, one would imagine, and Coventry can now set their sights on bolstering other areas of the pitch ahead of their season opener at home to Hull City on August 9.
