Coventry City should target a move for Josh Brownhill, who is a free agent after leaving Burnley this summer.

Coventry City enjoyed a reasonably quiet summer transfer window, but their business may not be done in the free agent market and there is one player in particular, Josh Brownhill, who they should look to bring in.

The Sky Blues improved massively following the appointment of Frank Lampard mid-way through last season, and they managed to finish fifth before a dramatic loss to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the play-off semi-finals.

Since then, Coventry have been able to regroup over the summer and look at where they could perhaps improve, whilst also keeping hold of key players such as Milan van Ewijk and Jack Rudoni.

They brought in full-back Kaine Kesler-Hayden for an undisclosed fee from Aston Villa, as well as Miguel Angel Brau on a free transfer from Granada, whilst Carl Rushworth signed on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion and then, on deadline, day, they completed the signing of centre-back Luke Woolfenden from Ipswich Town.

Defensive positions have been strengthened enormously and the attack seems to be in good shape, too, with Coventry having notched 14 goals in three Championship matches since an opening day goalless draw at home to Hull City.

The midfield also has enormous strengths, but one player that would raise the level even further would be the addition of Josh Brownhill, who remains a free agent.

Josh Brownhill would be a statement for Coventry

Towards the end of this summer’s transfer window, it was reported that Josh Brownhill was the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia, as well as Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It has also been said that he rejected an offer from Leicester City, following his departure from Burnley in early-to-mid-August, having captained the Clarets to automatic promotion from the second-tier last season.

The former Bristol City and Preston North End midfielder was exceptional for Scott Parker’s side last season, and he would be a major statement of intent from anyone.

A leadership figure, Brownhill can be a driving force from midfield with his energy and tenacity in the tackle providing a brilliant balance as an out and out box-to-box midfielder, which have become less common in the modern game.

In the Championship last season, only Leeds United striker Joel Piroe scored more than Brownhill’s 18 goals, with the fulcrum of a defensively rigid Burnley side enjoying a magnificent campaign going forward.

As well as that, he also provided six assists so his 24 direct goal involvements means that he was involved in almost 35% of the goals scored by a team that gained 100 points.

Josh Brownhill would compliment a strong Coventry side

Victor Torp has already emerged as one of the pre-eminent deeper goal scoring midfielders in the Championship, with Rudoni himself styling his game on the archetypal goal scoring midfielder, his manager Lampard.

Brownhill, though, would further bolster that attacking endeavour, whilst also having the bite and aggression in the middle of the park that would compliment the passing and technical quality of Matt Grimes.

The Coventry squad is a strong one and certainly has the quality to once again be recognised as promotion contenders, with a top six finish seeming almost already inevitable at this early stage, after last season’s exploits.

Taking the next step to becoming top two contenders could require nous and experience of having been there and done it before, and Brownhill certainly has that, with his pedigree perhaps simply just a level above what Coventry currently have to boast.

Signing Brownhill would not only be comedic for Coventry supporters after his Leicester rejection, but he would also represent a major statement of intent for City, and could well be the driving force towards another club gaining second-tier promotion.
