Coventry City urged to re-sign Sheffield United midfielder Gustavo Hamer this summer.
Coventry City are going back to the Premier League with the Sky Blues confirming promotion with a late goal to secure a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers last week and then winning the title with a 5-1 demolition of Portsmouth in midweek.
Frank Lampard took charge of the club mid-way through last season following the remarkable job done by Mark Robins and he led them to a dramatic and unfortunate play-off semi-final loss to Sunderland.
This time around, with not a lot of work done in the summer transfer window to refresh the squad but with a clean slate to go at, Coventry have threatened to be record-breakers at times this season.
A fairly lengthy mid-season blip did lead to them losing top spot for a week or so but their 3-1 defeat of Middlesbrough, the team that had gone top just before the clash, was the catalyst for another excellent run to the end of the campaign.
As they prepare for life back in the top-flight after a lengthy absence, their summer is expected to be busier this time around and reports suggest they hold an interest in re-signing Gustavo Hamer.

Having initially arrived in England with Coventry back in 2020, Gustavo Hamer became more than just a fans’ favourite at Coventry, establishing himself as one of, if not the, best players in the Championship.
He moved to the Premier League in the summer of 2023, joining Sheffield United, but with his time at Bramall Lane seemingly coming to an end, FLW’s Coventry Fan Pundit Chris Deez believes the club should seek to bring him back this summer.
Chris says: “Cov bringing Gustavo Hamer back appears to be a bit of a decisive topic at the minute.
“I’ve seen quite a few fans, myself included, who are well up for him coming back. I’ve seen quite a few that think that time has passed and we shouldn’t be going back in for former players.
“I don’t see why not, though. He’s Premier League-experienced. He loves the club, he’s still a good player and he would absolutely want to come back here and apparently he’s available for £6 to £8 million, which I think would be an absolute bargain for a player like him.
“Whether or not he starts for us or not, I think comes down to the rest of our summer activity.
“It depends if (Jack) Rudoni stays. He’s been linked with a £20 or £30 million pound move away, he was linked away with one last summer, as well.
“He’s (Hamer) a very good centre-midfielder but he’s an even better not quite a ‘number ten’, not quite an attacking midfielder but somewhere between the two. I think he would absolutely flourish with the likes of (Matt) Grimes and (Frank) Onyeka behind him and I would love to see him come home.
“I say home, I know he is from the Netherlands, but he loves it here. I am sure he is involved in some charities here in Coventry. He comes back to watch us play all the time.
“It just makes sense, especially at that sort of price. Now that we’ve gone up as champions, teams are going to be asking for double what players are worth.
“We’ve fallen foul of that in the past. We wanted to buy Liam Kitching for £2 million but ended up playing £4 million. I’m sure we didn’t want to spend £4.5 million on (Luke) Woolfenden but that’s what happens when you get promoted and teams know you want players.
“If Hamer is available for £6 million – bargain! Snap him up.”

There are a variety of ways a newly-promoted side tends to go about their business when they have gained promotion, with some clubs, like Ipswich Town, opting to recruit the best of the rest from the second-tier.
That is often, seemingly, with a view to being able to bounce straight back up and eventually sustain themselves for the longer-term if things are naturally difficult in the Premier League.
Others, though, perhaps most notably Sunderland, choose to spend big and bringing in pedigree in both the English top-flight as well as experience from top divisions from abroad to cement themselves immediately in the middle of the Premier League table.
There has to be a balance for Coventry, regardless of whichever way they go, perhaps unable to spend like Sunderland but also requiring a bit more top-flight experience than they currently have.
Of their current squad, only Luke Woolfenden, Frank Onyeka and Romain Esse have Premier League appearances – just 101 between them, though.
Hamer fits the bill in providing further experience in that regard, as well as being someone who would need no time to settle and it does appear to be both a sensible and straightforward decision should they indeed pursue the Blades midfielder.
