Coventry City are keen on Leicester City forward Abdul Fatawu, with a verdict emerging on the Ghanaian winger's future...

Coventry City are in the Premier League while Leicester City head to League One, which could see Abdul Fatawu on the move from the Foxes this summer.

The Ghanaian suffered an ACL injury in the top-flight but has been one of Leicester City's most exciting attackers when fit for the last three years. He managed two assists in his 11 Premier League games, but 15 goals and 21 assists in his 84 Championship appearances for Leicester shows how important he has been at the King Power Stadium in recent campaigns, having been something of a shining light as City slipped into the third-tier under Gary Rowett.

The Leicester winger has emerged as a target for Coventry City, with TEAMtalk reporting that Coventry have made formal contact with Fatawu and his agents ahead of their return to the Premier League.

With Jordan James and Fatawu combining for 16 and 15 goal contributions apiece, no one else in Leicester's squad managed more than 10.

Given their age, they are likely to have plenty of interest higher than League One, too, with the former now returning to parent club Rennes following an eye-catching season in the East Midlands in spite of Leicester's relegation.

The Coventry City verdict on Leicester's Abdul Fatawu

We asked FLW's Coventry fan pundit Chris Deez about the fact his side are said to have made contact with Fatawu’s agent in recent weeks in regards to a potential move to the CBS Arena.

He, of course, plays for bitter rivals Leicester, but we asked if he would take the Ghanaian as a summer transfer amid reported interest.

There’s undoubted potential there and he had 16 goal contributions in the Championship this past season.

He responded: "I would absolutely love to see Fatawu at Cov. I would sign him in a heartbeat if he is available and willing to move here.

"Leicester, obviously, had a bad season — which was wonderful for everyone at Coventry to see. But Fatawuu was one of their silver linings, one of their bright sparks in a very dark season.

"I've never really been the kind of fan that subscribes to not wanting to bring in players that have played for rival clubs. Look at Cov in the 90s when we were constantly selling players to Villa. We had loads of players go to Birmingham as well.

"I just think it's silly. If there is a really good player available, I do not care who he has played for before. Fatawu had 16 goal contributions last season. Is he Premier League ready? Who knows.

"He plays on the right, so he could be a potential upgrade on [Tatsuhiro] Sakamoto. I don't necessarily think he's better than Sakamoto, as Sakamoto has something different about his game and he is a work horse.

"He will run his socks off every game and he's so dedicated and committed and passionate and hard-working. We love him and I don't want to see him playing second-fiddle to another right winger.

"If we were to bring in somebody as good as Fatawu and rotate them with Sakamoto, I would be very happy with that."

Realistic price tag for Leicester City's Abdul Fatawu claim made

In terms of a price tag, Chris had other thoughts about bringing in competition for Sakamoto, adding: "I wouldn't want us to see Fatawu be our first-choice right winger and see Sakamoto just make the odd cameo here and there.

"So, yes, give me Fatawu. I think with Leicester's league situation and their financial situation, and the fact that they are probably going to lose most of their squad, especially their top earners and top players.

"I'd like to think Coventry could bring someone like Fatawu in for maybe around £10 million?"

The talented wide-man's future inevitably lies away from Leicester following relegation and has been the subject of speculation for some time, now, with that particular rumour mill only serving to intensify in recent weeks amid fresh links to the likes of Premier League trio Everton, Fulham and Sunderland alongside RB Leipzig.

Exactly how much money will be required to take Fatawu away from the third-tier outfit only remains to be seen, although recent reports have indicated that a fee between £15 million and £20 million could appease the Foxes in their fund-raising efforts post-relegation despite the Ghanaian's contract containing a £30 million release clause.

This means that a potential bargain deal looms on the horizon for somebody this summer, and Coventry should indeed be looking to take full advantage.
