As Coventry City look to build on a season of ups and downs, there are some clear priorities heading into the summer transfer window.

For many fans, the most pressing need is reinforcing the left-back position - a long-standing imbalance that has seen the Sky Blues juggle between two contrasting options.

Jay Dasilva offers energy and attacking intent but leaves gaps defensively, while Jake Bidwell brings solidity at the back but lacks the dynamism needed in forward areas.

With Harry Toffolo reportedly available on a free from Nottingham Forest, there's growing hope that Coventry might finally land a more balanced option in that role after interest revealed exclusively by Football League World.

Whereas in the attack, there's a thirst to see Conor Chaplin return to the club.

Sky Blues set sights on more balanced option at left-back

Considering Coventry’s transfer plans, Football League World asked resident Sky Blues expert Chris Deez for his thoughts on what would be a banker for the club this summer.

“I think there are two things that are dead certain bankers for the summer,” Deez told FLW.

“We really need to sort out our left-back situation - I love Jay Dasilva, had a really good end to the season, really glad he's been called up by Wales - he deserves it - but he's not a very good defender. He's great at getting forward, but defensively not the best.

“And then you've got Jake Bidwell, who is the complete opposite. He's a great defender, but can't get forward, hasn't got the legs for it anymore, can't do it a couple of times a week.

“I think we really need somebody that's an all-rounder - Toffolo from Nottingham Forest has been linked. I'm a big fan of that. I'd love him if he's happy to take a bit of a pay cut from the 35k (per week he's reported to be on) then yeah, that could be a fantastic signing for us, loads of experience.”

Deez also detailed a looming issue at the other end of the pitch: “And then the other banker, I think there's going to be a lot of movement up the top of the pitch for us with the attackers, the strikers.

“It's been a bit of a weird season because Haji Wright ended up as our top scorer. Despite being out for four months, he came back, got a hat-trick against Sunderland, looked like he was going to take us all the way to the Premier League, then he just went completely invisible for three and a half hours of the play-offs.

“And Ellis Simms is very much the same - he had a great season alongside Haji Wright the season before, but then this season he was poor. He does different things to your ordinary striker, because he's good at creating space, because he leads defenders away, but his job is to score goals and he does not score goals.

“I'd love to bring back Connor Chaplin from Ipswich. I think it's criminal how little he was used in the Premier League, and I'd like to think the chance to work under Lampard would entice him to come back.”

Beyond the left flank, questions remain about Coventry’s strike force.

While this past season saw Haji Wright end as top scorer and Ellis Simms continue to divide opinion, frustrations around consistency and reliability up front have grown.

Deez doesn’t mince words in voicing his doubts about the current options - but sees opportunity too.

Whether it’s reinvesting from outgoings or tempting a player like Connor Chaplin back to the Sky Blues, recruitment at the top of the pitch looks just as crucial as finally fixing the left-back dilemma.
