Coventry City secured promotion back to the Premier League after a dramatic late equaliser earned a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, sealing their return to the top flight after 25 years away.
Frank Lampard’s side knew a point would confirm promotion with three games still to play, but their celebrations were briefly put on hold early in the second half when Ryoya Morishita fired Blackburn ahead. The midfielder reacted quickest inside the box and his deflected effort found the net, threatening to delay Coventry’s long-awaited promotion party.
The Sky Blues had made a bright start before the break, with Milan van Ewijk’s long throws causing problems and Jack Rudoni seeing a goalbound effort blocked. Blackburn’s best first-half opportunity fell to Yuki Ohashi, though he could only direct a free header straight at Carl Rushworth from close range.
After falling behind, the visitors pushed forward in search of the decisive moment. Rudoni came close when he headed against the inside of the post midway through the second half as tension grew among the travelling supporters.
The breakthrough finally arrived six minutes from time. Substitute Victor Torp delivered a dangerous free-kick into the area and Bobby Thomas rose highest to guide a composed header into the net, sparking wild celebrations in the away end.
Coventry safely saw out the closing stages to confirm promotion back to the Premier League, completing a remarkable campaign and ending a 25-year wait to return to English football’s top tier
