Cole Palmer is in probably 90% of fantasy Premier League teams, and with good reason. The guy is a goal machine, he takes penalties and must be among the top scorers in the game over the last two seasons.

But his owners may be a little disappointed with his return in terms of assists recently. In fact, since the 1st of December (when he assisted Enzo Fernandez’s goal against Aston Villa), he’s got precisely 0.

Maybe he’s just hit a run of bad form? Maybe he’s not getting the ball to his teammates in the right areas? No. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. The attacking midfielder has created 32 chances in that time. That’s not just a lot, that’s more than anyone other player in the top 5 European leagues.

So his assist drought is through no fault of his own. He’s putting the ball on a plate, it’s just not going into the net. It’s a combination of some level of a real statistical freak – and just plain old bad finishing from his teammates.

It’s no coincidence that that run since the start of December has coincided with Chelsea’s form faltering. As their attacking players stopped finding the net with ease, Palmer’s assists dried up, and so did the points.

The law of average means that this run has to end soon, but more important than that is just finding a player to get on the end of those chances Palmer is creating who can reliably put them away. Jadon Sancho, Noni Madueke, Nicolas Jackson, Pedro Neto… they all bring different things, but none are proving to be as ruthless in front of goal as Palmer is.

This team won’t reach the next level without finding someone who is.
