Inter Milan are facing a full-blown injury crisis in the wingback positions ahead of matches against Napoli and Feyenoord.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They report that all of Carlos Augusto, Nicola Zalewski, and Matteo Darmian will be out.

Inter Milan lost versatile wingback Matteo Darmian to injury during Tuesday’s Coppa Italia match against Lazio.

The former Manchester United veteran had started that match on the right flank. However, he had to come off during the first half, with Denzel Dumfries replacing him.

Darmian will undergo medical tests today. These should clarify the severity of his injury.

But what’s clear is that Darmian will be on the sidelines for a few days at least.

And Inter can ill afford the timing of the 35-year-old’s injury.

The Nerazzurri have already had to do without a couple other wingbacks.

Carlos Augusto has missed Inter’s last couple of matches. This is due to a calf bruise that he sustained during the Derby d’Italia against Juventus earlier this month.

Then, January signing Nicola Zalewski picked up a calf problem in training this week.

Therefore, that leaves only Denzel Dumfries and Federico Dimarco as fit wingbacks for Inter.

The two regular starters will have to put in overtime amid this injury crisis in the wide areas.

That is particularly problematic considering how physically demanding the position is. Typically, Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi tends to make substitutions there during the second half of matches.

On the right, Benjamin Pavard is capable of switching to the wingback role. But on the left flank, there is really no natural option.
