Inter Milan have undergone significant changes under the stewardship of new manager Cristian Chivu after Simone Inzaghi’s trophy-laden four-year tenure.
According to Tuttosport via FCInterNews, the 45-year-old’s revolution at San Siro has affected the first-team status of four long-serving veterans.
Francesco Acerbi and Stefan de Vrij were the twin pillars of Inter’s defense under Inzaghi.
However, both players have tumbled down the pecking order this term, with the latter making just eight Serie A appearances.
As for the former, he has racked up 11 league starts, a far cry from the 20 he had accumulated in 2024/25.
Therefore, it’s unsurprising that both of them are likely to leave the club at the end of the season.
In addition to Acerbi and De Vrij, Matteo Darmian has seen his playing time significantly reduced compared to previous campaigns.
However, it’s worth noting that the experienced defender has missed a large chunk of the season due to injury.
Nevertheless, he’s also close to departing San Siro, with the Nerazzurri reluctant to extend his expiring contract.
Last but not least, Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s influence in the middle of the park has dwindled.
Indeed, the 37-year-old has registered 13 league starts this term, half as many as he did last year.
