Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed after Portugal’s last 16 defeat by Luis de la Fuente’s Spain at the 2026 World Cup that this was his final tournament.

Speaking in the mixed zone, he told SPORT TV he was devastated by the exit, felt he had given everything and would leave with a clear conscience, adding that this had been his last World Cup. He said he would take time with his family before making any decisions.

At 41, he accepts that reaching the 2030 World Cup in Spain, Portugal and Morocco in top condition would be very difficult. His sister had hinted at the decision after the match against Colombia.

Images showed him in tears on the turf as players from both teams offered consolation. He felt the tie was finely balanced and that Spain enjoyed a small slice of luck. He highlighted winning three titles with Portugal and said Euro 2016 carries the same weight as a World Cup for him.

The five-time Ballon d’Or bows out of World Cups with a landmark that stands alone, scoring at six editions. He debuted at Germany 2006 aged 21 and achieved his best finish by reaching the semi-finals, only the second time Portugal had gone that far, losing to France to a Zinedine Zidane penalty.
