Large crowd surges broke out at Mexico City’s Zocalo fan zone on Thursday as thousands tried to get in ahead of the 21:00 World Cup opener. According to L'Équipe, the pushing began around midday when supporters converged on the square.

A municipal official used a megaphone to urge people to stop pushing, warning that children were in the crowd.

Mexico is one of three 2026 World Cup hosts alongside Canada and the United States. The opening match sees Mexico face South Africa at Estadio Azteca in the capital this evening.

The game is scheduled to be shown on a giant screen at the Zocalo in the historic centre. Access to the square has been hindered by barriers set up to contain recent teachers’ protests.

The tournament runs from 11 June to 19 July.
