Manchester United are interested in signing West Ham United winger Crysencio Summerville, according to David Ornstein.
Despite West Ham having been unable to stave off relegation last season, a number of their best players – including Summerville – are expected to remain in the Premier League amid widespread interest.
The Hammers are understood to need to raise significant income to cope with the loss of revenue that their descent into the Championship will induce, with some estimates reaching as high as £150 million.
The London Stadium was also thrown into further chaos by the departure of chairman David Sullivan, who resigned from his position at the start of the month amid serious off-field allegations from a joint BBC Panorama and Times investigation.
Manchester United have been strongly linked with midfield maestro Mateus Fernandes. A deal is advancing after positive talks were held with the 21-year-old Portugal international, though the two clubs remain apart on a fee.
The Red Devils have also been linked with El Hadji Malick Diouf, West Ham’s flying full-back, as a back-up to Luke Shaw, while captain Jarrod Bowen is another target to provide a more reliable source of goals up top.
However, Ornstein now reveals Summerville is also high on the radar if United decide to target a new option on the wing.
The Athletic reporter states United are one of a number of teams paying “serious attention” to the 24-year-old left winger.
“One of those paying serious attention to Summerville are Manchester United, the tricky winger ranking highly among multiple options being studied in case they recruit in that position.
“United have enquired about his situation and will be aware that it is expected to cost approximately £50million for West Ham to sanction the departure of a player under contract until June 2029.”
The Netherlands international delivered a superb performance in his country’s World Cup opener against Japan, starting on the right for Ronald Koeman and scoring a lovely goal in the 2-2 draw.
This versatility – being capable of playing on either wing, or even through the middle – will be attractive to Old Trafford chiefs looking to bolster Michael Carrick‘s squad ahead of a return to the Champions League this season. Summerville’s track record in English football, having won the Championship Player of the Year with Leeds United two years ago, is another attribute INEOS prioritises.
If a deal in the region of £50m can be struck, while picking up Fernandes for around £65m, it would be a double swoop on East London that adds quality and versatility in M16.
