Manchester United risk missing out on yet another top target as AS Roma take a huge step towards signing the West Ham United winger, according to the latest report.

No.1 Target

While options such as Yan Diomande and Morgan Rogers are understood to be Manchester United’s leading candidates for the left wing this summer, the club are focusing on a major revamp in midfield as the priority.

This has led to cheaper alternatives, such as Summerville, being considered to ensure the bulk of the budget is spent fixing Michael Carrick’s stalling engine room. £85 million has already been spent on two new midfielders – Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans – with another big-money option expected to join them.

In response, Summerville has emerged as the “No.1 target” to bolster the forward line, with West Ham’s relegation giving hope of a cut-price deal being struck. The Hammers are understood to be asking for £50 million for their “incredible” 24-year-old Netherlands international, though a report relayed by The Peoples Person claimed the price could be closer to £30 million.

The Red Devils are not alone in their admiration of the former Leeds United star, however. The 2024 Championship Player of the Year has caught the eye of Premier League rivals Aston Villa, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as European champions Paris Saint-Germain.

But it is AS Roma who have stormed to the front of the queue, holding talks with Summerville’s agents this week to try and lure him to the Italian capital – an approach which has proven successful, much to the chagrin of United.

Summerville gives green light

Italian transfer expert Matteo Moretto reveals Summerville has given his green light to Roma, with both parties closing in on an agreement on wages. The Giallorossi are pushing to finalise the move by the start of next week.

Moretto claims Roma’s next step is to “submit an official offer” to West Ham, though Sky Sports Italia had previously revealed the Serie A side were preparing a bid worth around £40 million. If the Hammers stay true to their £50 million valuation – as they did when Manchester United were trying to sign Mateus Fernandes last month – it is likely this offer will be rejected.

Other Premier League clubs are continuing to pursue Summerville, Moretto claims. While he does not mention specific clubs, it is understood the strongest interest in the Dutchman within England comes from United and Tottenham Hotspur.

In fact, the threat from North London is such that INEOS fear Tottenham Hotspur may hijack another move for one of their prime targets, having struck an £85 million deal for Fernandes a few weeks ago.

Final Thoughts

If the total cost of a deal for Summerville came in around the £30 million mark, the West Ham winger would be a sensible addition to add more depth and variety to Manchester United’s forward line.

But if the price climbs closer to £50 million, as feels likely if Roma are willing to open talks at the £40 million mark, a winger with 10 goals and just eight assists in 84 Premier League appearances quickly loses sense as a target, no matter how impressive their World Cup campaign was.
